B2B Email Marketing: A Practical UK Guide

Permission-based B2B email marketing - list building, lead nurturing, segmentation and how to market to businesses legally and effectively.

15 min read

B2B email is slower and more considered than B2C, but arguably more valuable - a single won deal can be worth thousands. Here's how to do it legally and effectively in the UK.

How B2B email differs

B2B inboxes are checked with intent, decisions involve multiple people, and the sales cycle is long. Emails nurture over weeks and months rather than driving instant purchases. Relevance and timing matter more than volume.

Permission in B2B

The rules differ depending on who you're emailing. Email to individuals at their personal address generally needs consent under PECR. Marketing to corporate subscribers (eg info@ or purchased business lists) has a 'soft opt-in' / legitimate interest angle in some cases, but the law is nuanced and depends on the corporate subscriber exemption and the soft opt-in rules. This area is easy to get wrong - take advice and check the ICO's current guidance before relying on bought B2B data.

Build a permission-first B2B list

  • Capture emails with valuable content (white papers, templates, webinars).
  • Gate genuinely useful resources, not thin PDFs.
  • Use your sales team's relevant inbound conversations.
  • Keep records of when and how consent was given.

Segmentation is everything

  • By stage in the funnel (awareness vs ready to buy).
  • By industry, role or account.
  • By engagement (opens, clicks, downloads).
  • By product interest.
